Down low, at speed, there's no room for error. Most people picture flying as something that happens high in the open sky, but a helicopter pilot's world is close to the ground, where the real dangers live: power lines, trees, sudden dust, rolling weather, all of it rushing at you fast and unforgiving. Over more than twenty years and thousands of flying hours, Jason Grey has worked in that demanding low-level world across some of the harshest environments: flood rescue, earthquake relief in the mountains, offshore oil and gas, dense jungle operations, and night flying from coastlines to mountain ranges, across multiple continents. Down there, the difference between a good day and a disaster comes down to a single moment of clarity: seeing the wire, the distant aircraft, a subtle clue when the wind shifts, and trusting your eyes when everything depends on them.
The off-the-shelf eyewear the market pushed didn't hold up. He wanted something built for his environment, not adapted to it, and it didn't exist. So he built his own, and wore it, for years, in places that break gear and men. If it passed, it earned the X. If it didn't, it never left the test bench.
That's where Aero began, in Stellenbosch, South Africa, a place of rugged beauty where dramatic mountains keep watch over the coastlines, and great whites patrol the waters where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. It was born out of a simple refusal to accept 'good enough' when it comes to what sits between your eyes and the world. It's a standard we still hold today: nothing carries the X until it's been proven.
